What color is sage green?

Sage is named after the leaves of the herb: a soft green with a lot of gray in it. Paint brands sell dozens of versions. Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog was that brand’s 2022 Color of the Year, and Benjamin Moore picked October Mist for the same year, so you’ll see both on plenty of sage walls. PaintTry’s own Soft sage is the first color in the app’s palette.

Pick the sage undertone for your room

Gray-leaning sages look modern and quiet, and they suit gray sofas, white trim and cooler light. Yellow-leaning or warmer sages, closer to olive, feel cozier next to wood floors and in rooms without much sun. Blue-leaning sages read fresher and work in bright, south-facing rooms.

To see the undertone, hold the chip against a sheet of plain white paper, and compare two sages next to each other. On its own, almost any sage just looks green.

Sage green living room ideas

In a living room, sage gets along with natural wood, cream or light gray upholstery, linen curtains and brass. Off-white trim keeps it soft; a brighter white trim makes the green look crisper. Terracotta pots, rust cushions or a clay-colored rug give it a warm contrast.

Sage green bedroom walls

Sage is a common bedroom choice because it is calm without being dull. Pair it with white or oatmeal bedding and light wood. Under warm bedside lamps, many sages drift toward olive, so look at the sample at night. A deeper sage behind the headboard with lighter walls elsewhere is a gentle way to add depth.

Sage green accent wall

For a sage green accent wall, go a step or two deeper than you would for a whole room, and keep the other walls a warm white so the green has something to stand against. The wall behind the sofa or bed usually works best. Our guide to choosing an accent wall covers which wall to pick.

Test sage green in your own light

Sage changes a lot with light. North light pulls it toward gray, warm afternoon sun pushes it toward yellow-green, and lamps make it warmer still. Try it in a photo of your room first: in PaintTry, select the wall, pick Soft sage and adjust the strength to see a lighter or richer version. Then put a large sample on the wall and check it over a couple of days.

Common questions

What colors go with sage green walls?

Warm whites and creams for trim and ceilings, natural wood, and terracotta, blush or mustard as accents. Charcoal and navy give stronger contrast. Very cool, bright whites can make sage look dull, so check the trim and wall color together.

Does sage green make a room look smaller?

Not usually. Light and mid sages are soft enough to sit back, so the room usually just feels calmer. A deep sage on every wall of a small room will feel more enclosed, which some people want in a bedroom or den.
